David Bogue D. D. (1750-1825), pasteur non-conformiste à l'initiative de la Mission de Londres et du séminaire de Gosport

Dr David Bogue, petite chronologie

David Bogue est né le 18 février 1750 à Dowlau, lieu rattaché à la paroisse de Coldingham (12 km) en Ecosse. Il est le quatrième fils d'une famille de douze enfants. Son père était avocat et sa famille membre de l'église nationale d'Ecosse, l'Église presbytérienne ou Church of Scotland (calviniste).

- En 1756, scolarisé jeune, il commence à apprendre le latin à l’âge de 6 ans. Il a fréquenté la grammar-school de Dunse.

- En 1762, à l'âge de 12 ans, il entre à l'université d'Édimbourg pour 9 années d’études (N ° 176.2). Il continue l’étude du grec, du latin, l'hébreu, des mathématiques, fait de la philosophie et la théologie, tout en cultivant une piété profonde.

- En 1771, après de brillantes études de théologie à l’université d’Édimbourg, Bogue obtient son Master of Arts (Magister Artium MA) et la licence de prêcher dans l'église d'Écosse. En 1815, l’université de Yale lui decernait le grade de doctorat Honoris Causa.

- En 1772 il attend d'être consacré à Coldingham. Mais son père s'opposant à la règle d’élection du pasteur, non par le Consistoire, mais par les notables aisés de l’Église locale, cela empêcha David d'être nommé pasteur dans l'Église d'Écosse. Suite à quoi il fit carrière en Angleterre, dans l’Église libre.

- En 1772, David Bogue prêche son premier sermon à Londres, dans l’Église libre de M. Muir.

- En 1774-1777 David Bogue devient l’assistant du pasteur William Smith, collaborant avec lui dans l’Église et son école à Londres.

- En 1776, David Bogue décline l’appel de l’Église écossaise d’Amsterdam

- Le 28 janvier 1777-1825, l'église indépendante de Gosport appelait David Bogue à devenir son pasteur. Il est resté à ce poste pendant 48 ans, jusqu'à sa mort. L'église qui accueillait 1 200 personnes presque chaque a été détruite en 1941 par un bombardement ennemis. Elle a été reconstruite rue Bury et appartient aujourd'hui à l'United Reform Church.

- Le 18 juin 1777, Bogue est installé comme pasteur à Gosport.

- Fin 1777-1789, il accueil chez lui un premier élève fin d’année. Il continue a donner des cours privés chez lui, développant son propre curriculum qui conjugue les études classiques et scientifiques. C'est la première période de son Académie qui deviendra institut biblique missionnaire en 1800.

- En 1781 il contribue à la fondation de l'association des églises indépendantes du Hampshire (Hampshire Association of Independent Churches) qui encourageait l"évangélisation chez soi dans sa maison.

- En 1785, David Bogue a séjourné un mois à Paris avec Matthieu Wilks (1746-1829) du Whitefield's Tabernacle de Londres, père de Mark (1783-1856) qui a été à Paris à la Chapelle Taitbout.

- Le 28 août 1788, David Bogue épouse Charlotte Uffington. De cette union vont naître sept enfants : quatre fils et trois filles.

- En 1789 il fait partie des fondateurs de la Religious Tract Society

- De 1789 à 1799 sous l'impulsion du philanthrope londonien, le banquier George Welch, l'Académie de Bogue devient un l’Institut Biblique pour pasteurs itinérants dirigée par David Bogue et fiancé par Welch qui confie à Bogue trois proposants au ministère pastorale pour les églises dissidentes. C'est la deumière étape de développement de l'école.

- En 1792, Bogue fondait la French Bible Society, dissoute en 1803, et remplacée en 1804 par la British Foreign Bible Society ("annexe" de la London Missionary Society) qui cherchait d’abord à atteindre les prisonniers français en Angleterre.

- En mars 1792, Bogue prêchait à Londres à l’occasion d’une rencontre de la Société pour la propagation de l’Évangile dans les montagnes et les îles de l’Écosse, appelant à prendre des mesures pour annoncer l’Évangile aux nations païennes. Cet appel précèdait celui rendu célèbre lancé en mai 1792 par Wiliam Carey à l’occasion d’une assemblée générale de pasteurs baptistes à Nottingham : « Attendez de grandes choses de Dieu ; entreprenez de grandes choses pour Dieu ».

- Le 2 octobre 1792 dans le salon de la veuve Wallis était fondée la première Mission Baptiste : la Particular Baptist Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Amongst the Heathen.

- En juillet 1794, le Dr John Jr. Ryland (1753-1825), directeur de l’Académie baptiste de Bristol, reçevait les premières nouvelles Carey arrivé au Bingal. Parmi ses collègues non-conformistes qu'il décidait de réunir figurait Bogue l’indépendant.

- En septembre 1794, sous l'impulsion de ces nouvelles de Carey communiquées par Ryland, Bogue prenait l’initiative de relayer l'appel missionnaire en publiant un article dans l’Evangelical Magazine, mais à destination des protestants « pratiquant le baptême des nourrissons ».

- Dès le 4 novembre 1794, chaque mardi matin : quatre indépendants, David Bogue, Joseph Brooksbank, Reynolds et John Townsend, deux whithefieldiens, John Eyre et Matthieu Wilks, et deux presbytériens écossais à Londres, John Love et James Steven se retrouvent dans le Baker’s Coffe House de Londres. L’idée était de créer une Mission interdénominationnelle selon le principe du Catholic Spirit qui associait dissidents, méthodistes, whithefieldiens et anglicans évangéliques. Le 8 janvier 1795, le cercle s'agrandit. Il fixe à la date de l'Assemblée constituante au mardi 12 et mercredi 13 mai 1795. Les 23 personnes réunies décident de fonder la Mission sur avec l'accord d'un plus grand nombre de personnes.

- La Mission de Londres est fondée les 22-24 septembre 1795, lors d'une convention réunissant 200 pasteurs et des laïcs. D'abord dénommée Missionary Society, elle prend le nom de London Missionary Society (LMS) en 1817.

- En 1796, son ancien élève Robert Haldane (1764-1842) proposait à son professeur David Bogue de partir avec lui en Inde. Mais le projet échoua à cause du refus de l’East India Company de le laisser aller évangéliser en Inde.

- De 1800 à 1826, l'Institut Biblique devient le séminaire préparant les missionnaires de la Mission de Londres. C'est la troisième période de développement de l'école. Jusqu'en 1826 elle a formé 208 étudiants. Robert Morrison (1782-1834) surnommé « l’apôtre de la Chine » a étudié à Gosport de 1803 à 1807, avant son futur collègue William Milne (1785-1822) qui arriva lui en 1813 à Gosport. Mais des français comme les pasteurs Laurent Cadoret et Philippe Bellot aussi.

- En 1802, Bogue, Matthieu Wilks et d'autres délégués de la LMS vinrent à Paris pour y mener une enquête que la diffusion de la Bible. Après 3 jours de marche ils ne trouvèrent pas même une portion des Écritures.

- En 1804 Bogue fondait la British and Foreign Bible Society. Cette année sa fille Mary mourrait dans son jeune âge.

- Le jeudi 14 janvier 1808 à Londres, en ouverture d'une rencontre pour la promotion de collèges protestants du courant dissident, Bogue prêche un sermon sur "la nature et l'importance d'une bonne éducation" The nature and importance of a good education, a sermon, preached January 14, 1808, at the Rev. - En 1814 le deuxième fils Thomas était emporté à l’âge de 22 ans,

- En 1822, le plus jeune fils John mourrait à l’âge de 20 ans

- Le 26 février 1824 David Bogue perdait sa femme Charlotte, 7 mois avant la mort à l’âge de 19 ans, le 27 septembre 1824 de David, le troisième fils de la famille. Bogue avait fondé beaucoup d’espoirs en lui pour lui succéder à Gosport. En 1817, il avait obtenu un MA à l’université de Glasgow et avait enseigné avec lui au Séminaire missionnaire de 1817 à 1821. Il avait ensuite entrepris des études de Droit pour devenir juriste, mais il est mort avant d’achever ces études.

- Très affecté, le 25 octobre 1825 David Bogue père, mourrait l'année suivante.

- Peu après la mort de David Bogue père, c’est Louise, la plus jeune fille qui décédait.

- puis le fils aîné John décédait en 1837.

- c’est la fille aînée Mme Parker qui vécu le plus longtemps.
